How to Enable Long Paths and Filenames

Windows has a default max path length of 260 characters. A long file name, particularly when combined with the repository path, may cause this to be exceeded.

Windows 10 (1607) and Windows Server 2016 have a group policy that enables support for path up to ~32,767.

How To

gpedit.msc → Local Computer Policy → Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Filesystem

Enable "Enable Win32 long paths" or "Enable NTFS long paths" (in older builds).

A note about Isilon SANs and the OneFS file system

The Isilon file system OneFS had a file name limit of 255 characters (or less if Unicode) and a path limit of 1024 characters (or less).

Version, 9.3, released in Oct 21, increases this to a max file name length of 1024 and a max path length of 4096.
